Vote for Aves at Orang Rock Corps

This week's nominated organisation is...

Avenues Youth Project

The Avenues Youth Project provides a wide range of activities and projects for young people to participate in. All the projects are devised following consultation with young people themselves, and all offer the chance to gain accreditation.

The Avenues uses projects as a way of getting key messages across to our members in a non-threatening way. These include information concerning sexual health, drugs education, healthy eating and speaking and listening skills.

Youth workers regularly support young people with CV writing, job applications, references, interview skills and other support needed to assist young people as they progress from school to the world of work.

Why Dernel nominated:

"I started attending the Avenues Youth Project at the age off 11 to do street dance. At the time Avenues was merely a single storey block building. When the building was refurbished 3 years later, with two floors a media suite, dance studio and kitchen I enrolled on a journalism and radio-training course. When I passed the necessary modules for these two courses, Avenues allowed me to deliver radio training to the young people.

Avenues also put me through an introduction course to Youth Work. Avenues has helped with my passion for writing and drama and allowed me to stage one of my plays at a theatre, it was a success. Without Avenues I would not have been able to achieve the things that I have.

Volunteering has been one of my best decisions in my life, I have gone on to stage-manage local festivals, and present my own show on the fm dial. Avenues are an organisation that helps hard to reach young people off the streets of London and into positive activities, volunteering there allows me to be part of that cause.
